Starting can be the hardest part of any update or design. It can be overwhelming to think about how everything will tie together...does the curtain fabric really go with the tile selection, is this the perfect dining table for my style???
My suggestion is to start with what you have.
What I mean by that is to pick one or two things that you love and can't do without ( an heirloom cabinet, a wedding gift) or with something that you hate and can't change ( an award alcove, a window to your neighbours brick wall) and work from there.
Maybe the piece you love is a dark rustic wood heirloom but that is far from your style. Mixing styles is fine and an eclectic mix of things can make a room feel much more stylish than buying everything from the showroom of a big box store, so just go with it.
